Mrs. Snethen in the Caribbean

By: Grade 4

In the land of corn a twister twisted into Olathe, beautiful Lindy and handsome Tony got blown away to a remote island called Tortola. “We’re not in Kansas anymore” whispered Lindy, “No, I don’t think we are” replied Tony. Lindy and Tony thought it was a nice place so they decided to live in Tortola so they went searching for an apartment, they finally found one at Lambert, it was a small one, but it was okay for them. It was nice because the beach was quarter of a mile from their apartment and they didn’t have beaches where they used to live, however they needed to find a job! Lindy passed the test for being a fourth grade teacher and Tony got the job of an I.T. teacher and an English teacher, both jobs were in the same school! Lindy and Tony were ready for what would await them. But they still needed school supplies, so Lindy and Tony went out shopping............”Holy Cow” Lindy thought to herself “These are expensive”. “In Tortola things are VERY expensive” Lindy shouted to Tony, meanwhile Tony had found that out as well by looking at a shampoo bottle for $6.99. Even though the prices were expensive Lindy and Tony bought all of what they needed! Lindy and Tony drove back home and saw her furniture from their house in Kansas, “It must of got caught in the twister with us” exclaimed Lindy. So they both went and unpacked all their stuff....well all the stuff that managed to blow away with them. They both couldn't wait till when school starts!

The first day Lindy met the new grade four students, she was confused with all the names, so Lindy put class numbers in. Lindy was surprised with their creativity and enthusiasm the kids had in learning. They were so joyful Lindy was their teacher. Lindy was learning so much from the grade four as much as they were learning from her. Lindy was learning how the students are, how they live and what personalities they had. She got to know all the names by heart and was happy she was a grade four teacher.  As she kept learning, she figured she had to invent a summative assessment for their U.O.I subject, Indigenous People. So she decided to do a mueseum.......

Mrs.Snethen was in the atrium to set up the museum for the projects, and when the students were done with it, they went to lunch, and after lunch they went to the Museum to show the primary what they learned from the topic, of the Native Indians. All the primary was impressed about how much she has taught them. Also, primary loved the indian projects that they had made. When the class had their museum a lot of people asked question about the projects and commented on them. When they were doing their projects the students sometimes read the information cards to the people. On the end of our museum they started to clean up because it was almost the end of school and the kids were tired. They had done so well that Lindy promised to take the class to Oil Nut Bay in one week.

One week passed and beautiful Lindy was getting ready to go to Oil Nut Bay with her class for their fun day out! She was packing sunscreen, swimming gear, a towel, water and very importantly, food! When she got to Cedar International School with her very handsome husband, Tony Snethen, Lindy was extremely excited because she loved the beaches and pools that the British Virgin Islands had, because in Kansas there is no sea in sight! As Lindy got to her classroom, all her students were lined up outside they were ready to go to Oil Nut Bay! When she opened the door they all said “Good Morning” then went straight inside and followed the Morning Message like usual. The children were very eager to know who would be taking them to the ferry dock and who would be in charge of them for the day. The chaperones were Debby Greenwood, Monika Riegels, Tara Null  and Krista Kite! When everyone went to the cars they were all ssssssssoooooooooo excited that they started singing with joy! When they were all at the ferry dock they boarded the ferry and started drawing pictures of the trail they were going on after the boat ride they went to have their snack in the restaurant area, after that they hid their life jacket and the others would have to find it! A few hours later they all had lunch then they got changed and went swimming some people went on a hobi/cat others went swimming. The hobi/cats mast split in half when they were sailing so they fell in the ocean. The pools and ocean were so refreshing it was such a hot day and everyone was having fun but then it was time to go all the children said their “Thank You’s” and boarded the boat back home they all had an amazing adventure that no one can forget!

November the 4, Lindy and the class were at the beach having so much fun like relaxing, potato sack races, lime and spoon races and someone brought a big floaty/bouncy thing so that the children could have fun on it.

Lindy was having fun with all of the parents. One thing Lindy did not enjoy is that Tony was not there! We all had fun and probably Lindy was having the most!

When it came to Thanksgiving, Laurie invited Lindy to come to her house for Thanksgiving. All the teachers would be there including Amelie and Remi who were Laurie’s step children. Amelie was really excited for Lindy to come because she was a really fun teacher. Lindy dressed up and put on some make-up. So then, Lindy and Tony went in the car and drove to Laurie and Peter’s house. So she knocked on the door. Amelie opened the door and said “Hi, Mrs.Snethen.” So Lindy said “Hi Amelie.”. Then Amelie zipped past Remi to say that some of the guest had arrived. When it came time to eat Tony had a big plate (and I mean really big. And guess what he had seconds.). The evening went by and all the adults were chatting and having a nice time. Everyone enjoyed the dinner. Then it came time to go and everyone went home!

“These mosquitoes are biting like crazy! I don’t mean to be a woosie but I NEED A VACATION!” whined Tony. “Dominica Is supposed to be the best Island here-we might as well go...........!” Lindy pointed out. “We could ask Mrs.Greenwood and Mrs.Munro about it, Mrs.Greenwood spends lots of time there with her family and Mrs.Munro had visited Dominica a few months ago.” Suggested Lindy “If it’s a trip from all these mosquitoes then I’m in!” Tony sarcastically said “Okay.I’’l talk to Mrs.Greenwood about flights and where to go , you can ask Mrs.Munro about hotels, and where we should stay. Deal?” Asked Lindy “Yeah, deal! We’ll ask them on Monday but on a Sunday it’s beach time, let’s go!” Requested Tony ”I’ve finished grading The Symmetry Math Test, so I guess we could go but we better hurry, or the mosquitos will get worse!” stated Lindy. Sunday passed and it was Monday, the day to ask about Dominica.

Tony and Lindy finished off their breakfast and headed out the door at dead 7:00. They got there at about 7:25 and hopped out the car ready for a busy day at school. Tony had lots of work to plan out for the morning so he went to his classroom, meanwhile Lindy unpacked her bag and got ready for the day. At 8:00 Lindy walked outside her classroom in search for Mrs.Greenwood. She found Mrs.Greenwood in Kindy and asked her about the flights first,”Hello Mrs.Greenwood!” Lindy cheerfully said “Me and Tony are planning on going to Dominica, do you have and special flight you take that would be easy to book?” inquired Lindy “We used to book on Liat but they’re quite expensive, so we usually book on B.V.I Airways” answered Mrs.Greenwood “Thanks, do you know any good places to go when we’re visiting?” asked Lindy “Well you should certainly go to the baths and some waterfalls, and if you think you’re fit enough the boiling lake hike.” suggested Mrs.Greenwood “For the baths do you have a favourite place?”  Implored Lindy “Well......they are all basically the same but I think Screw is relaxing” answered Mrs.Greenwood “Okay, thanks for the advice” thanked Lindy as she walked back to her classroom. Lindy taught the whole morning and when the clock turned 10:15 she went up to the staff room and to ask Tony what Mrs.Munro

had said about the hotels. “What did Mrs.Munro say about the hotels?” Lindy blurted out “ She said Roots was a good place to stay at. Should I look it up?” questioned Tony “Alright. while you’re doing that I’ll fill you in on what Mrs.Greenwood said” replied Lindy. Lindy told Tony about the baths and waterfalls until it was time to go back to teaching. When they got home they booked the flights and searched up the places they were going to look at. Four more days passed and then it was the day to fly. They already had their suitcases packed so all they had to do was drive to the airport. As they were driving they came to a sudden stop. Their tire had punctured and they would have to replace it. Tony and Lindy didn’t want to mess up their clothes so they pushed the car to the side of the road, called a tow truck, then caught a taxi to the airport. They got their 30 minutes late but made it in time for the flight. They boarded the airplane and flew to Antigua, after that they boarded again and flew to Dominica. They got to Dominica at 1:12, so they had lunch at a resteraunt in the airport. After that they got the Roots hotel taxi to take them to the hotel. They got back to the hotel and rested a bit then set off to go visit a waterfall called …...... They got to the site at 2:00 and actually found the waterfall at 2:15. They changed into their swimsuits and put on sun lotion then dived in to the waterfalls river, they took a shower under the cold water that the waterfall was producing. After they swam in the waterfall and river Lindy and Tony were told they were allowed to pick coco’s and they did. They sucked the seeds in the coco and let the coco’s dry to make a homemade chocolate. Then they went looking at the exotic flowers and smaller waterfalls at the site. After that they called it a day and went back home on a zip line that the hotel they were staying at provided. They woke up to the sound of the sea swaying back and forth and the birds sending of alarms. It was a Sunday and usually it was “Beach Day” but as they only had today to go to a site because tomorrow was a holiday they decided for tommorow to be “Beach Day” and today they would visit a hot bath. They had breakfast, eggs, beans and bacon, and packed their swimsuit, hat, sun lotion, water and some snacks, just in case that there were no snacks there. As usual they got a taxi and drove to Screw’s, it took an hour so it was good they got to relax in the hot baths.First they went to the natural sulfur pools then they made their way to the human made pools. There were hot pools and cold pools and a river which you could slide down on it. After they went to the sofa pools they went to the hot pools, then the cold, then the hot, then the cold, then the hot untill their time was almost over. When there was only twenty minutes left they went to the river and slid down it several times. After that they were treated to a national dish called mountain chicken which is chicken/frog legs seasoned with salad. They ate the dish even though Tony wasn’t so keen on it. They went back to their hotel and dropped their bags in their hotel room then went to the beach and had another relaxing evening. In the morning Tony agreed to go on off-roaders to explore the island because they did go to the beach already, but after they got back they would have to go to the beach. So they rented two off-roaders and went exploring. First they went exploring in town, then parked their off-roaders and went river tubing down Layou River. After they finished the river tubing it was 12:34 so they had lunch then went back on their off-roaders,did a little more exploring, then they went back to the hotel. They went down to the beach and had dinner there. When they got back to the hotel they packed for the trip back home.
The next week, Lindy was quite excited to go to The Baths, but she didn’t know it was extremely rocky.  She thought that she would hit into a rock. Later Lindy heard a scream it was Tony he get stung by a jellyfish. Of course Lindy saved Tony. They they went for for ice-cream.And had more adventures to come!

The next adventure was to Anegada.  The boat left the station and Lindy smiled,as for Tony he was staring at the Anegada map “um... wifey are you sure you want to do this,   I mean look at all of these roads,” said Tony. “Yes I’m sure, it will be fun don’t worry said Lindy.”  Before they knew it they were at Anegada, they gathered their things and hopped on to the doc a horse and carriage was waiting by the doc Lindy said with a smile “Ow thank you Tony you thought of everything” and was about to walk onto the carriage tony pulled her away and said “um yeah we're not going in that” than Tony pointed to a worn out car that was small and dodgie Lindy said “Oh and how much did you pay for this car? Tony giggled and said “Well it was cheap but we saved money” Lindy stuffed up her face and said “ How much!” Toney blurted out $12.00”Lindy said “we are getting another car.” After that they started to explore Anegada Tony started to make weird turns then after about 10 or 15 min. Tony said “ Uh oh.” “What” said  Lindy. Tony blushed and said WE'RE LOST!!!!!!! Lindy got into the driver's seat and drove off to a different road soon they were at the hotel and Lindy unpacked and went to bed. The next morning they woke up at 8:50 and got to the doc there they found a big boat with their friends on it they jumped on and spent the night on the waves then in the morning they spent X-mas on the boat and then went home to her class.

“We’ll be in Jost in no time”, Tony said to Lindy as they sped away the next weekend on their rib Rue...

4 HOURS LATER

“Ahh we’re here” said Tony, “after 4 hours” said Lindy.

“Now, where are those quad bikes we were supposed to ride?” Lindy asked herself.

“Owww, I seem to have fallen on this bike, it has 4 wheels and...” “Quad bikes, those are the quad bikes”, said Tony “Oh no dear, we were just looking for those, remember? If those were the quad bikes we wouldn't be looking for them would we? ” said Lindy.

After Lindy found out that those “bikes with 4 wheels” were the quad bikes, Tony and lindy drove around the island and Tony even let Lindy drive, but Tony was a smart guy, before he let lindy drive he asked the rental company if they had insurance but luckily, this time it wasn't needed.

After the quad bike journey was over, Lindy and Tony went out to a water trampoline that was anchored out in the bay and started bouncing and bouncing and bouncing until the 2 decided to go take a swim on the beach. But they didn’t swim for long because they saw a dark figure in the water. Quickly they ran out of the water and realized how hungry they were. Lindy wanted to go to a place called One and Tony wanted to go to a place called Love so, they went to a place placed conveniently right in the middle of the two called One Love.

Lindy was at the smugglers cove, the beach. It was a ridiculously hot day,and Lindy was sunbathing, she put on some tanning oil and fell asleep in the sun. An hour later Lindy woke up and she looked at her skin and started panicking it was dark pink , Lindy didn’t know much about sunbathing, when she touched her skin she started screaming. Lindy jumped in a BIG cooler of ice and let her husband, Tony, take her home in that. In the car as they were leaving smugglers lindy brushed against the seat and  screeched “oww that’s the last time I fall asleep in tanning oil.”

“YES”! Lindy exclaimed. “I know, right. We are finally going to the beautiful coral reefs in the Indians” Tony replied. They met up with their friends Matt and Gemma, they were as overwhelmed as Lindy and Tony. The four teachers hopped on Matt's boat and drove off to the mystical Indians!

“It is just as beautiful as they say it is” Gemma laughs! Gemma,Matt,Lindy and Tony all had a blast while snorkeling ,bumping into turtles, sharks and many more eye-popping creatures. Once they all finished they decided to head to another breathtaking place... the Caves!

“We are getting spoiled living in the luxurious caribbean” Lindy decided. Lindy was totally right, in the caves it seemed enchanted. The animals swimming in the water looked very peculiar but at the same time pulchritudinous!Once they finished off examining water they headed back to their original home, Tortola!

The walk at Cooper Bay was a long one and Lindy and Tony passed a large ruin. They tried to guess what it was for. “Perhaps it was a bakery”, said Tony. “I think it may have been one of those places where they made rum”, said Lindy. They both agreed that this was what this lovely ruin had been. Finally they got to the beach and could wash some of the mud from the walk off their feet. Tony and Lindy walked up and down the beach. Then they decided to go into the waves. Tony splashed Lindy until she told him stop and then she splashed him back. When it was time to go they found it hard to leave this peaceful place. On the way back they noticed a well. There was some water in the well and leaves and a frog too. They made it up the steep climb to the car and drove home.

Lindy has been really looking forward to seeing her parents all the way from the land of corn (Kansas)!  Finally  her parents were here. “Let’s go to the airport to pick up my parents Tony,”  Said Lindy. “Yes,” Replied Tony.  Time to go! Can’t wait!  When they got there they found Lindy’s parents and left to go home! They couldn’t wait to go to the beach and go on a day sail!  When they got home it was late so Lindy got the guest room ready for her parents and they all went to bed! The  next day they went on a day sail. Tony was scared when Lindy was driving! When they got home they had a feast. They had Steak, mashed potato, peas, and broccoli! The next day they went to the beach! They had a lovely day swimming and sun tanning! Lindy couldn't wait to see her 4th grade class again after the break.

‘’Puerto Rico!’’ Lindy exclaimed as she and her friends were walking on the plane.’’This is gonna be awesome,’’ said Gemma. ‘’Ya,’’ said Laurie, ‘’we’re gonna go hiking through rainforests and waterfalls and go ziplining.’’ ‘Aand go shopping!!!’’ said Stacy. Twenty  minutes later, ‘’Flight  Attendants prepare for takeoff.’’ “Please turn off a electronic devices,” said the pilot. Then the plane shot up into the air. During the flight Lindy and Gemma talked of how exciting the trip would be. “Oh it’s gonna be so fun,” said Lindy. “Ya,” said Gemma. After they stopped talking the pilot said, “Flight  Attendants prepare for landing”.

As they got their bags  Lindy remembered she had and she needed to get some food. “Guys I’ll catch up with you later,” said Lindy. “Ok,”  said the others. She grabbed her stuff and off she went to the Plaza Las Americas(a shopping mall near the hotel they were staying at) Lindy bought some chips, water and soda.

                             One day later

Whoosh, Lindy went as she ziplined through the rainforest to meet her friends at the other side. “That was fun,” they all said at once. “Now I get to decide what to do next,” said Stacy.

“Let’s go to.....

“Wow,” said Michelle “this water park is amazing.” “Ya,” said Laurie, “I’m definitely gonna recommend this to other people.” “Let’s go find some snacks,” said Stacy. “Ya,” said Lindy. “I’m starving.”

As they got back to the hotel Stacy said “ I’m stuffed” they all agreed at once.

                                       The Next Day

Pant Pant, they went as they reached the top of the highest hill in Puerto Rico. “Wow” “I feel,

like I’m,

on the,

top of,

the,

world” Lindy said softly. “Ya” they all agreed at once.” Great choice for the last day Michelle” said Gemma. “Speaking of the last day I need to pack’’ said Lindy. ‘’Same here’’ they all said.

‘’Well that’s the last of it’’, Lindy said as she packed up her suitcase. ‘’Time to go to the airport’’ she thought outloud. They all met down at the lobby. ‘’I’m gonna miss this place’’ said Laurie. ‘’And all the good shops’’ Stacy added in.  As they got into the taxi they were all as quiet as mice. They passed the runway and the the sign saying welcome to Puerto Rico. As they checked in their  bags Lindy noticed their flight was delayed till 8:00  because of a severe storm.

As they waited for the plane to take off Lindy and Michelle read, Gemma and Stacy talked and Laurie just stood there wondering if they'll ever get home. ‘’Flight Attendants Prepare for take off’’ “Finally” they all thought out loud “we’re going home”

45 minutes later “Flight Attendants prepare for landing” as they got closer to  the runway they felt a jolt upwards and the plane started to turn around what’s happening they all wondered. The captain apologized and said they were going back to Puerto Rico because the storm was too big for the plane to land in.

When they got back to Puerto Rico they saw Abby and Sarah Kite. Abby said Sarah this airport  is surrounded with teachers what do we do? Well explained Abby don’t make eye contact with them and  Mrs. Snethen might not give us any math homework and whisper so they can’t hear us.

In the end Laurie got on the flight  with the Kite’s and Sarah thought she was going to die because the airplane shook a lot.  The others got back in the morning and the storm cleared up.

At the end of the year her students were upset to leave her, their eyes, but they had a bright horizon before their eyes! As a thank you present, they decided to make her a book about most of her adventures in the beautiful Caribbean! Right now, after reading this book, Lindy must be thinking “wow I have done a lot”, but oh no this is only the beginning of all the adventures that she will experience! Long may your adventures continue, Lindy Snethen!
